Interview with AJ Norris

Today’s interview is with A.J. Norris. She is a Paranormal Romance/Fantasy author with Limitless Publishing LLC and prefers chocolate chips to raisins.

2017-headshot-AlisaNorris-3.jpg1 What makes you the writer that you are?

AJ: Um…life.

MAY: Haha. That is the briefest answer I’ve heard, but it makes sense 🙂 I think the characters in my head make me into a writer. If I didn’t have an outlet, I would probably go crazy.

2 If you could go on an adventure with your fictional hero, who would you take and where would you two go?

AJ: Does it have to be a hero? I love Abaddon from my Dark Amulet series. Sure he’s arrogant, but he has a softer side that my readers haven’t seen yet. I could go anywhere with him because he makes me laugh.

MAY: I would love to go to a murder mystery with Sherlock Holmes. There are a ton of things I could learn from his deductive thinking.

3 What are your favourite and least favourite parts of the writing process?

AJ: Favorite parts of the writing process: Creating new worlds, making my characters squirm, killing the truly awful characters (very rarely do I write something where someone doesn’t die), and making shit up.

I only have one least favorite part and that is the amount of time required to write a book.

MAY: I know what you mean. It can take from 1 month to a year to write a book, depending on how much time we have available and if the characters are cooperating. I think my favourite part would be the research. It is fascinating how far we have come and the history we have built our societies on. Though, I still dread the marketing part. It is like a pit that swallows money and haunts you in your dreams.

4 Rain or sunshine?

AJ: At night, I enjoy falling asleep to the sound of rain outside. During the day, I prefer the sunshine.

MAY: I think it rains in Ireland almost all the time. I’m used to it by now.

5 Imagine you wake up one morning with a superpower. What power would you like to have?

AJ: I wish I could teleport. I’m not fond of flying. In my Dark Amulet Series, the angels can teleport on Earth.

MAY: I think I would pick an ability to memorise anything I’ve seen or read. It would be more useful to my writing if I didn’t have to keep going back and forth between my books and looking up what was written.

6 What led you to become a writer?

AJ: I woke up one day and thought, how hard could it be to write a book? LOL. I was totally naive. It’s a lot harder than it looks. It’s a 24/7 thing. Literally. Finishing a book requires loads of self-discipline. You have to really want it and love it.

MAY: I fell into writing. It seemed that no matter what I picked as a career choice, something led me back to the creative work and writing. So, when I got sick in my final year of university, I decided to write while being stuck in bed. It was the best decision I’ve made.

7 Do you have any advice for aspiring fantasy authors?

AJ: Don’t hold back when you write. You can always fix a scene that’s over the top. Although, the best advice is: keep writing and working on your craft. The more you write, the better you get.

MAY: Great advice!

8 Chocolate chips or raisins?

AJ: Chocolate chips

MAY: I don’t know why, but I really do like raisins. I guess the idea that they’re dried up grapes doesn’t put me off. #RaisinsNeedLoveToo

9 How, if at all, has your life changed since you became a published author?

AJ: I don’t think my day to day life has changed. However, I’ve met some really great people and my life is much fuller because of that.

MAY: I’m glad you’ve found people you like. I, too, have come across a couple of good friends who have helped me on this journey and gave me their support when I needed it most.

10 Please tell us a little bit about your upcoming projects.

AJ: Right now I’m working on a short story for an anthology and a paranormal/fantasy collection of novellas. The short story is set in the same world as a short I have in the anthology, Craving: Secrets, called Alternative Facts. The novella collection is called The Gods of Greyfall, which I’m hoping to have published by early next year.

Here’s a blurb for AJ’s first book of The Dark Amulet Series, Her Black Wings.

Amalya Rivers longs to die and end her lonely existence—but it doesn’t work out that way…

A former runaway turned criminal, Amalya is murdered and thrust into a treacherous world full of red-skinned, horned beasts under the control of the Demon Ruler, Abaddon, instead of enjoying peace and serenity like she hoped. But saving a young child from a certain brutal death in the last moments of her life has earned her a chance at salvation.

Elliott the Redeemer wants no part in saving another soul…

After one too many failures at redeeming lost souls, the nail-biting, self-pitying Elliot has had enough of his work and would prefer to live out his eternity on Earth drowning in bourbon. It doesn’t matter that Amalya has grown black feathered wings signifying the good that still dwells within her. He can’t risk failure again.

Amalya must save someone from her past in order to escape Abaddon’s rule…

She has to prevent the now grown child she saved from committing murder or risk returning to Netherworld with Abaddon for good. She can’t do it alone, though. Amalya needs the help of the angel sent to guide her, but their emerging love might not be enough to convince Elliot she’s worth the risk.

Amalya loves her black wings. She knows she’s meant to be an angel—and she will stop at nothing to prove it…
